My Story With NARUTOSCISSORS | Fossette Arisa Yoshitake&Ryo Yamanaka
Fossette, a hair salon located in the Sun Road shopping street just a five‑minute walk from Midorigaoka Station in Miki City, Hyōgo, welcomes you with a calm, stylish atmosphere and a warm, personal touch the moment you step inside.
Owner Ms. Yoshitake and staff member Ms. Yamanaka once honed their skills together as senior and junior stylists at the same salon. Today, both of their scissor cases hold almost identical Naruto scissors, carefully treasured as if chosen in perfect sync. From their dedication to their tools to the mutual respect they share, we spoke with this perfectly in‑tune duo.

■ A Perfect Coincidence: The Story of Two Stylists Who Chose the Same Tools
— Your scissors lineup is almost identical! What made you choose Naruto scissors?
Yoshitake: Ever since I was in elementary school, I had a hairstylist I admired who always cut my hair. That stylist used Naruto scissors, and I remember thinking, “When I become a hairstylist, I’m definitely going to use Naruto scissors too!” So I decided that as a kid.
My first two pairs were a gift from my parents when I became a stylist. I truly felt, “I’m going to treasure these for life.”
— That’s a wonderful story! And Ms. Yamanaka, did you choose Naruto Scissors because you admired Ms. Yoshitake?
Yoshitake: Let’s just say that’s the story we’re going with! (laughs)
Yamanaka: Totally staged! (laughs) But honestly, since my senior stylist used Naruto scissors, I knew that when I bought my own, I wanted something truly good—something I could use for years. When I asked my dealer for advice, they said, “Then it has to be Naruto scissors.” After that, nothing else was even an option.
— So the fact that you ended up with exactly the same models—was that just a coincidence?
Yamanaka: Yes, it was. I chose from the models recommended to me by Mr. Ochi from Naruto Scissors, and later realized they were the same ones Ms. Yoshitake had. (laughs) Back then, we worked at the same salon and both handled a similar clientele—women in their 20s to 30s—so maybe it was natural that we gravitated toward the same tools and functions.
■ How You Use and Differentiate Your Cutting Scissors
— How do you differentiate between your cutting scissors?
Yoshitake: I love the Maticline CL so much that I actually bought a second pair—they’re just incredibly easy to cut with. Right now, I use the slightly mellowed pair for dry cutting, and the freshly sharpened, sharper pair for wet cutting, switching them out depending on the situation.
When I only had one pair, I used that single pair for everything. Now that I also have the Logic Karakusa, I never have trouble even when I send one in for sharpening.
■ How You Use Your Cutting Scissors
Yamanaka: I also use the Maticline CL—the first pair I ever bought—as my wet‑cutting scissors now. I mainly cut wet when I’m doing a big style change for female clients.
On the other hand, for maintenance cuts on women who aren’t changing their style, and for men’s cuts, I use the Gothic Karakusa. It works perfectly for both wet and dry cutting, so it’s my all‑rounder.
— Both of you seem to switch your scissors in a smart cycle: once the sharpness settles a bit, you use them for dry cutting, and the freshly sharpened ones for wet cutting. By the way, Ms. Yoshitake, your handle has a customized thumb position. How does it actually feel to use?
Yoshitake: They’re really easy to hold! It’s smooth to slip my finger in and out, and I can open and close the scissors firmly and comfortably. I liked it so much that I asked for the same customization on both pairs.
■A Choice Made Thanks to Her Father’s Recommendation?
The Bold Presence of the Karakusa Handle
— The Karakusa‑design scissors were purchased by you first, right, Yamanaka?
Yamanaka: Yes. It happened right when I had to send my first Maticline CL in for sharpening, and I suddenly needed another pair. At that moment, Yoshitake’s father told me, “You should get the Karakusa design!” (laughs)
Yoshitake: Exactly! (laughs) When I was choosing my first pair of scissors, my dad was super into the Karakusa handle. But back then I said, “I want something normal!” and turned it down. (laughs)
Yamanaka: Her father said, “This is the one I like,” so I went with it. (laughs) But honestly, the look is insanely cool, and cutting with them is fun. They’ve become my absolute favorite pair now. Using them boosts my confidence, and clients often say, “Wow, those scissors look amazing!” which really gets the conversation going.
— Ms. Yoshitake, you also purchased the Karakusa‑design scissors (Logic Karakusa) afterward, right?
Yoshitake: I originally liked simple, sleek scissors, but little by little I started thinking, “I kind of want the Karakusa…” Yamanaka bought his first, so I did think, “We’re going to match…” (laughs) But I still wanted one, so I ended up getting the Logic Karakusa in a 6‑inch size that fits my hand perfectly.
■Reliable Results Without Visible Lines
Growing Together Because You Use the Same Tools
— How do you differentiate between your thinning scissors?
Yamanaka:
For me, it’s mainly about the thinning percentage. When I need to remove a solid amount of bulk, I use the 3suki Trente S26 to take out the weight roughly. Then for fine adjustments—especially around the face—I switch to the 2sukiLamuneS31, which has a lower percentage.
Yoshitake:
Actually, at first I mainly used the lower‑percentage 2suki Lamune S31. But since Yamanaka does a lot of men’s cuts, he often used the 3suki Trente S26. After hearing him talk about it, I thought, “You know what… he’s right.” (laughs)
So I eventually started using them the same way he does.
Yamanaka:
Because we use the same scissors, we can casually say things like, “Hey, this one might work better.” It makes it easy for us to share tips and improve together.
— Are there any “differences” you feel you can achieve precisely because they’re Naruto Scissors?
Yamanaka: With thinning scissors, I really feel, “Yeah, these are definitely different.” With regular scissors, you can clearly see the marks—like, “Ah, they cut twice right here.” But with Naruto scissors, even if you go in bang bang, the lines blur beautifully. You can’t really tell, “They cut like this here.” That’s what makes them so good.
Yoshitake: Oh, absolutely! That’s a huge difference. For example, even if I have to step in after Yamanaka has cut a walk‑in client, I never have any trouble. With new clients who were cut somewhere else, I often think, “Ah… fixing this is going to be tough…” (laughs) But with Yamanaka’s cuts, that never happens. Because the scissors don’t leave visible lines, I feel secure—even when a client wants a lot of thinning, I can confidently go in and remove the weight.
— With so many scissors that look the same, do you ever have incidents like “Oh no, our scissors got switched!”?
Yoshitake: Nope. (laughs) Absolutely not! Definitely not!
Yamanaka: I think we’d notice right away just from the feel when we pick them up and start cutting.
Yoshitake: First of all, we don’t let each other touch our scissors. (laughs)
Yamanaka: (laughs) Yeah. And since we each keep our scissors in our own cases, there’s really no chance they’d get mixed up.
Yoshitake: Even if we take them out for photos, I only put away my own. I get nervous otherwise. (laughs) I don’t touch other people’s scissors. I’m like, “Um, could you put yours away?” (laughs)
A New Beginning Decided in an Instant:
“You coming?” — “I’m in!”
— You opened Fossette in September 2022. That must have been a major turning point.
Yoshitake: I’ve always had a strong desire to have my own salon. So when the opening was decided, I was nothing but excited. When I left my previous salon, I asked Yamanaka, “I’m opening a shop — you coming?” And he said, “Ah, I’m in!” right away. So I was like, “Okay then!” (laughs)
— That was fast! (laughs) Yamanaka, why did you answer so quickly?
Yamanaka: At my previous workplace, I was fully committed to training the junior staff. But around that time, I also felt ready to challenge myself in a new stage. So when Yoshitake reached out to me, I felt it was a chance to test my own potential. That’s why I answered on the spot, “I’m in!”
— Tell us about the “commitments” or “values” behind your current salon.
Yoshitake: As we age, our hair concerns change, right? I want this salon to be a place that can truly support people through those changes. To help clients keep their precious hair beautiful throughout their lives, we focus on damage‑less techniques and carefully selected products. If there’s something good out there, my mindset is basically, “Let’s just bring it all in!”
Yamanaka: For me, I want to stay close to my clients in a warm, comfortable way. At my previous salon, it was such a big team that I often said, “I’ll leave the rest to the assistant,” and didn’t get much time with clients myself. Now I want to create a warm atmosphere where clients feel like, “I came here to chat, and my hair turned out great.”
■Two Stylists with Different Strengths:
Their Respect for Each Other — and Their Love for Naruto Scissors
— What do you respect about each other?
Yoshitake: Yamanaka is incredibly observant. He really pays attention to everything around him. When I’m focused on the client in front of me, my field of vision tends to narrow… so I know it’s harder for him, but he always helps me so much.
Yamanaka: I’d like her to look around a little more… (laughs). But honestly, that’s also her strength. No matter how tight the schedule gets or how long a client has to wait, she always finishes beautifully and thoroughly. She makes sure clients leave only after she’s done everything she wants to do for them. That’s something I truly admire.
— Lastly, please share a message for Naruto Scissors.
